About
Yugabyte is the company behind YugabyteDB, an open-source, PostgreSQL-compatible distributed SQL database designed for cloud-native, mission-critical applications. Founded in 2016 by Karthik Ranganathan and Kannan Muthukkaruppan, the company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, with offices in Singapore, Bangalore, Pune, and Tokyo.
YugabyteDB combines auto-sharding, distributed consensus replication inspired by Google Spanner, and full PostgreSQL compatibility. It supports multi-zone, multi-region, and multi-cloud deployments with built-in high availability and disaster recovery. The platform also supports GenAI and RAG applications through vector indexing capabilities.
Yugabyte is backed by investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sapphire Ventures, and Dell Technologies Capital, having raised $188M in a Series C round in November 2021. The core database is open-source under Apache 2.0, with YugabyteDB Aeon offered as a managed DBaaS.
