About
Proton is a Swiss technology company building a privacy-first ecosystem of products. Founded in 2014 by scientists who met at CERN and headquartered in Geneva, Proton is majority owned by the non-profit Proton Foundation. The suite includes Proton Mail (the world's largest encrypted email service), Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar, Proton Pass, and Proton Authenticator.
All Proton clients are open source under GPLv3. The company was initially crowdfunded on Indiegogo and has grown to offices in Geneva, Zurich, Paris, London, Barcelona, Skopje, Vilnius, Prague, and Taipei.
The engineering stack includes Rust (cross-platform shared business logic), React and TypeScript (web), Go (backend), SwiftUI (iOS), and Jetpack Compose (Android), with deep expertise in end-to-end encryption and zero-access architecture.
