About

PlanetScale runs cloud databases for MySQL (via Vitess) and Postgres. PlanetScale Metal puts databases directly on NVMe drives. Neki, their next-generation Postgres sharding architecture inspired by Vitess, is in waitlist.

Founded in 2018 by the co-creators and maintainers of the Vitess open source project, originally built at YouTube to scale MySQL to petabytes across 70,000 nodes and 20 data centers. Customers include Cash App, Intercom, MyFitnessPal, Cursor (Anysphere), Convex, Depot, Dub, Barstool Sports, and Supermemory. Vitess itself runs at Slack, HubSpot, GitHub, Etsy, Bloomberg, Blizzard, and Yelp.

Globally-distributed team. Self-described as a small group of database experts.
