Base is an Ethereum L2 blockchain built on Optimism's open-source OP Stack. Incubated within Coinbase, Base plans to progressively decentralize over the years ahead and contributes a portion of sequencer revenue to public goods funding. The team joined as the second Core Dev team on the OP Stack.

The stated goal is to bring a million developers and a billion users onchain, with an open-source, free-to-use, globally available platform. The Base App bundles social, apps, payments, and finance in one place.

Internally the team operates by "Stay Based" values and describes itself as a "Zone 3+ work ethic" environment where hard weeks and personal tradeoffs are expected to drive impact.
