Picture the C++ job you have in your head. Is it a game engine? A trading system? Someone tuning a kernel at 2am?
The board has a different picture, and one detail jumps out before any of the others: almost half of C++ jobs want you in the building.
On October 6, 2026 we counted 1,087 open tech roles that name C++, at 171 companies (distinct roles, so one role posted in ten cities counts once). That is 9.3% of the 11,704 open tech roles we track, and up from 980 when we last counted on September 17. Of those 1,087:
510 are onsite (47%)
342 are hybrid
198 are remote within a country or region
37 are labelled remote from anywhere
Across the whole board, onsite is about a quarter of roles. For C++ it is nearly half. Look at what these jobs actually are and you can see why.
What C++ jobs are now
Most C++ roles have a plain title like "Software Engineer", so a title tells you less than you would like. But among the ones that do say what they are about, one group is far bigger than the rest:
| What the title mentions | Roles |
|---|---|
| Robotics, autonomy, perception or simulation | 83 |
| Embedded or firmware | 37 |
| Games, Unreal or engines | about 29 |
| Trading, quant or low latency | 10 |
| GPU, CUDA, kernels or compilers | 9 |
The trading desk and the GPU kernel are real, but they are a rounding error next to physical things: vehicles, robots, simulators, devices. Hardware lives in a building, and that is our best explanation for why so many of its engineers are asked to as well.
Who is hiring
One company dominates again. Anduril Industries has 267 open roles naming C++, which is a quarter of all of them on its own. After that:
| Company | C++ roles |
|---|---|
| Roblox | 74 |
| Nuro | 54 |
| OpenAI | 52 |
| Databricks | 33 |
| Canonical | 32 |
| MongoDB | 32 |
| Cloudflare | 26 |
| Snowflake | 25 |
| Epic Games | 22 |
| Nebius | 21 |
So: a defence company, a games platform, an autonomous driving company, an AI lab, and then databases and infrastructure. Take Anduril out and there are 820 C++ roles left, and the next twelve employers hold about half of those. 124 of the 171 companies have only one to three C++ roles open.
C++ rarely travels alone
Only 76 roles name C++ as their only language. Python shows up in 682 of them (63%), Rust in 404, Go in 387, C in 319 and Java in 309. Close to half of C++ roles name four or more languages.
The Rust overlap is the interesting one. 404 roles name both, which is 37% of C++ roles and almost half of all Rust roles on the board. If you write C++ today, a lot of the employers who want you are also writing Rust next to it. (We looked at the Rust side of that in the Rust post earlier this month.)
Where we can separate the core of a job from the things it mentions in passing, C++ is core in 317 of 508 roles, about 62%.
Pay, and getting in
707 C++ roles publish a yearly US dollar band. The median floor is $190,000 and the median ceiling $253,000. That is level with Rust ($191,000) and about $22,000 above Go, Python and TypeScript.
Here is the surprise in the data. 65 C++ roles are junior, which is 6.0%. That is above the 4.6% across all open tech roles, and more than twice Rust's 2.4%. Same pay floor as Rust, more than twice the share of entry-level roles. If you are early in your career and choosing between the two for systems work, C++ is the more open door right now.
If C++ is your language
Expect to commute, or to move. Remote C++ roles exist (235 are remote in some form) but they are the minority.
Pick your physical domain. Robotics and autonomy is the biggest identifiable cluster, and the companies in it hire a lot of C++ at once.
Learn enough Rust to read it. Over a third of C++ roles name it too.
Do not ignore Python. It is in nearly two thirds of these roles.
Every role on remoet.dev/jobs carries its stack and remote policy, and if you star the companies you care about, their new roles come to you as they post.
Where this could be wrong
We match "C++" (and "cpp") in the stack a model extracts from each post, so "C++ or Rust" and "C++ and Rust" look the same. The job-type table only covers titles that say what they are about, which is a minority. The game count is approximate, because "engine" also matches every "Engineer", so we counted it with a stricter pattern that may miss some. And it is all one day, October 6, 2026.
If you write C++ for a living and the board looks nothing like your job, we would like to know what we are missing. Come tell us in Discord.
